CiTi BOCES Student Excels at Statewide Welding Competition
CiTi BOCES student Logan Duval earned top honors at the second annual New York Thruway Cup Welding Competition, held May 3–4 at the Arc & Flame Welding Center in Rochester. Competing against students from across New York state, Duval placed first in the MIG welding event, fourth in TIG welding, and third in the written exam.
For his outstanding performance, Duval received several prizes, including a Lincoln Viking 3350 welding helmet, a Miller MIG 142 welder valued at $1,300, a variety of tools, and $600 in cash awards.
The competition, sponsored by the American Welding Society (AWS), brought together the top three students from each of the five AWS sections in New York state: Twin Tiers, Niagara Frontier, Rochester, Syracuse, and northern New York. The Syracuse section, which included Duval, finished third overall in the event.
Duval’s achievements reflect the high-quality instruction, hands-on training, and industry-standard resources offered through the CiTi Career and Technical Education (CTE) Welding Technology program.
“Logan put a lot of work the last two years into welding in the shop and on his own,” said CiTi BOCES welding instructor Zachary Thompson. “When I had him the first year in my class, I had to kick him out of the booth at 2:30 every day or he’d miss his bus. He did extremely well at the Thruway Cup and is the type of kid that will have success in anything he does.”
