Students Embrace Healthy Habits at OCAY League Competition

Students from Oswego County school districts came together for a day of wellness and health at this year’s first Oswego County Academic Youth (OCAY) League competition, held at Selkirk Shores State Park in Pulaski, NY.
Competing in a “Healthy Habits Showdown,” students participated in several wellness activities such as doing yoga, meditating, observing nature with a scavenger hunt, researching healthy habits, quizzes and applying new expertise to build a presentation on their research.
After collaborating in teams of ten, students put their creativity to the test by creating a musical presentation and informational posters on their chosen wellness topic, which ranged from phone addiction to healthy foods. Their research and activities supplied them with knowledge of health, nutrition, math, biology, exercise science, creativity, teamwork, public speaking and time management skills.
Mexico Academy & Central School District placed first at the end of the competition, followed by Phoenix in second place and Oswego in third place.
OCAY League promotes academic excellence through collaborative competition among Oswego County school districts. Teams of students participate in multiple events throughout the year, each designed to challenge their collaboration and creativity.
First place winners from Mexico Academy & Central School District: Emma Belfield, Noah Gagnier, Isabella Ladd, Kyler Laffan, Emily McCoy, Jessa Ricker, Nataleigh Smith, Matilda Tunis, Ava Warchol and Christopher Wood.
