P-TECH Students Gain Manufacturing Experience with Sock Snowmen Project
Oswego County P-TECH students recently combined hands-on learning with community service by creating sock snowmen, an idea created by instructor Mark Rogers.
Designed to emphasize precision and accountability in a manufacturing setting, the project divided students into specialized stations. Each station was responsible for a specific task: cutting socks, filling socks with rice, tying them off, creating hats and adding decorative details.
“If one station made a mistake, it affected the entire production line,” said Rogers. “Success depended on each station’s accuracy and teamwork.”
The finished sock snowmen were donated to students in the CiTi BOCES Strive program, bringing joy and warmth during the winter season. The project not only reinforced essential workplace skills but also highlighted the value of community service and generosity.
Oswego County P-TECH remains committed to preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Hands-on initiatives such as the sock snowmen help students develop practical skills while fostering creativity, teamwork and a sense of purpose.
