July 15, 2025
Dear Families and Staff Members,
New State Law Regarding Smart Device Use in Schools
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and elected officials recently passed a new law requiring all schools statewide to prohibit the use of smartphones and other smart devices during the school day. This ban extends from the start of the school day until dismissal.
This means students will no longer be permitted to use their:
- Smartphones
- AirPods/earbuds
- Smartwatches
- Other personal devices that can access the internet
There are important exceptions to this new rule:
- Medical Reasons: Students who require these devices for documented medical reasons are exempt for medical purposes.
- IEP/504 Plans: Devices specified as part of a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 accommodation plan are also permitted.
- Instructional Purposes: Staff members can authorize students to use personal smart devices exclusively for instructional activities.
The primary goal of this new law is to reduce distractions and foster a more focused and productive learning environment for all students.
Our Policy and Your Input
In compliance with this new state requirement, our district has developed a comprehensive policy. You can review the full policy on our website at: [insert link].
We understand this is a significant change, and we are committed to implementing it smoothly. As part of this process, we are seeking input from staff, students and families. We want to hear your ideas on how we can best navigate this transition to minimize distractions effectively while supporting our students.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work together to create an optimal learning environment.
